After five years caring for local patients in GV Health’s Oncology Unit, Stacey McDermott never imagined she would one day be on the other side of treatment. However, cancer doesn’t discriminate. In February 2026, after booking a routine breast screen, the 45‑year‑old was diagnosed with breast cancer. Within weeks she underwent surgery and has since begun chemotherapy, experiencing firsthand the journey she has supported so many patients through.
When Stacey noticed her hair beginning to fall out after her first round of treatment, she decided to take control of the moment by organising a small head‑shaving gathering with close family. Word quickly spread, and what began as a quiet event grew into a crowd of more than 40 family members, friends and neighbours who came together to show their support.
In a powerful show of solidarity, Stacey’s father and two friends shaved their heads alongside her, while her niece and nephew joined in by colouring their hair. Together, the group raised an incredible $3,000, which Stacey has generously donated to purchase essential equipment for the Oncology Unit.
GV Health Foundation Director Amy De Paola encouraged the Goulburn Valley community to follow Stacey’s lead and support local causes.
“When we support local charities, we are investing in better outcomes for our own community,” Ms De Paola said.
“For GV Health, every donation helps enhance patient care, fund vital equipment and services, and ensure people across our region can continue to access high-quality healthcare close to home. By giving locally, donors can see the direct impact of their generosity in the communities where they live, work and raise their families.”
Community members interested in holding their own fundraising initiatives, such as morning teas, charity shaves, workplace fundraisers or sports club fundraising events, are encouraged to connect with the Foundation via email at GVHealthFoundation@gvhealth.org.au.
