Our History

GV Health has consistently and generously been supported since being established in 1876. THe GVH Foundation was formally established in 1989.

GVH Foundation's history

GV Health’s long-standing tradition of grassroots support reached a formal turning point in 1989 with the establishment of the GVH Foundation. Born from a powerful community campaign to fund a new children’s ward, the Foundation was created to channel local generosity into a shared belief: that the people of the Goulburn Valley deserve access to high-quality healthcare close to home. From its inception, the Foundation has acted as the modern custodian of the community’s philanthropic spirit, transforming local donations into life-changing medical facilities.

As community needs evolved, so too did the Foundation. In 2010, the Board of Trustees resolved to broaden our scope beyond a single ward to support all clinical and community services across the health service. Relaunched as the GV Health Foundation, our mission expanded to strengthen the full spectrum of care delivered by GV Health.

In 2011, the Foundation successfully led a $1.3 million public appeal to build a new oncology unit — a milestone that reflected both the growing needs of our region and the community’s willingness to step forward.

Today, we continue to build on that legacy: partnering with community groups, service clubs, trusts, businesses and individual donors to invest in the infrastructure, programs and people that underpin quality healthcare across the Goulburn Valley.

GV Health's history of community support

Since the hospital’s humble beginnings in 1876, the community has consistently and generously provided support through a variety of means that has enabled the hospital to grow and provide quality local health care.

The very foundation of the hospital was built on local generosity, starting with the donation of land by Mr. W.S. Archer and the construction of the first wards funded entirely by the “Ladies of the Goulburn Valley.” Over the decades, iconic fundraisers like the Hospital Sunday appeals, Queen Carnivals, and the 3SR Radio Hospital Appeal have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for essential infrastructure and high-tech medical equipment.
